Remakes and reboots have always had their way with the audience. Some have made their mark at the box office and the others have flopped and been forgotten. Disney, a prominent player in the movie production business has seen this trend as an opportunity to keep its revenue flowing. Other production houses are following its lead. We’ve already written before about the state of Hollywood with multiple remakes of IPs, but here is a look at some of the more popular remakes and reboots that are set to release in 2019:

Pet Sematary

Based on Stephan King’s 1983 novel, Louis and his family move to a small town in the woods where they encounter an uncanny pet cemetery. A horrifying secret is unleashed when Louis does something he wasn’t supposed to do. Stephan King’s novels never fail to surprise us. Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Everest, First Man) looks captivating as always. The reader is advised not to see the second trailer of this movie as it gives up most of the plot. This remake will be compared to the 1989 released film.

Men in Black: International

A spin-off sequel to the Will Smith franchise, the movie will star Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Liam Neeson. Initial impressions from the trailer indicate that the film will stick to its roots of sci-fi comedy. However, fans are disappointed by the absence of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (the leads of the first three movies).

Child’s Play

chucky | remakes and reboots

The reboot will stick to the roots of the original movie that was released back in 1988. It was based on a doll named Chucky which carried the soul of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer. The new film will feature new technological upgrades for the doll. The new doll will be called Buddi- an unrestrained AI robot. Don Mancini, the creator of the original movies has no role in the this reboot. However, a Child’s Play TV show is in the works under Syfy.

Natalia Reyes, Mackenzie Davis and Linda Hamilton

The new Terminator film will be directed by Tim Miller ( of Deadpool fame). Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be reprising their iconic roles. James Cameron (who is busy with his Avatar films) is serving as the producer. Early reports suggest that the film will be a sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The working title of the movie is Terminator: Dark Fate.

The Lion King

Probably the most awaited film from all the remakes and reboots in this film,The Lion King is considered to be a benchmark in cinema. The movie released back in 1994 was perfect in every aspect. James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa. Other voice actors are Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Donald Glover as Simba and BeyoncĂ© as Nala. Disney has trusted Jon Favreau to direct the film after the success of The Jungle Book. The saddest part about the release of the new live-action remake is that we will have to witness Mufasa’s tragic fate again.

Hellboy

Fans have been sceptical about the reboot.

This reboot was unexpected and will compete with the original Guillermo del Toro directed film. Many fans have expressed disappointment as del Toro will not be returning to direct, write or produce the film. The good news is Neil Marshall (Game Of Thrones season 2, Westworld, Black Sails director) will helm the film. Surprisingly, the movie is R-rated due to excessive violence, blood and gore. David Harbour ( Winner of Critic’s Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor- Stranger Things) will play the role of Hellboy.

Dumbo

The adorable flying elephant is back. The trailer reveals that the movie will be shady and dark unlike the classic of 1941. The film is in safe hands under Tim Burton who has directed other kids movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Frankenweenie and Alice in Wonderland. The 1941 film had some heart touching moments that made adults cry too.

These remakes and reboots are all set to earn huge numbers at the box office, hence consolidating the trend for the future
