HBO (Home Box Office) has dominated the field of television for a long time. As of now, it faces stiff competition from a number of production houses such as Netflix, ABC, and Starz. HBO has been responsible for introducing the audience to premium and critically acclaimed TV shows from the beginning of the 21st century. Here is a list of the best HBO shows of all time.

1. The Sopranos

The Sopranos HBO

The Sopranos is widely regarded as a benchmark in the television industry by both the critics and the audience. It revolves around New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano and the problems he faces both in his private and professional life. The show has its elements of occasional violence, gore along with multiple instances of black comedy. It has a realistic approach to a mobster’s life and this sets it apart from the other shows on TV.

2. The Wire

“The Wire is the best TV show of all time.”

This is what I’ve heard from everyone who has watched the show. The series presents different perspectives (of drug dealers and the police) about the rampant drug network in Baltimore, Maryland. It will be the first TV show that I’ll binge watch during the summers.

3. Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones HBO

Game Of Thrones has the reputation of being the most pirated show on the planet. The final season is currently airing and fans cannot keep their cool. Families fight for power in the mythical land of Westeros. It presents the best of politics, betrayal, and violence.

4. Veep

Veep is one of the most hilarious TV shows that I have ever seen. It is a satire about the White House and gives us an insight into the life of a Vice President. Julia Louis Dreyfus has done a phenomenal job in the show. She won an Emmy for every season of Veep. The seventh and final season is on air every Sunday.

5. True Detective

True Detective is probably the darkest TV show ever made. It is an anthology with each season featuring fresh actors and a new premise. Prominent actors that have appeared are Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and MAhershala Ali. Each season has a different case with cults, city corruption, abductions and of course murder.

6. Westworld

The only sci-fi show of the list, Westworld leaves the viewer confused with a number of unanswered questions. The premise is set around a futuristic theme park where guests interact with human-like androids. It represents a horrific journey into artificial intelligence. Fans were disappointed with the second season though due to its complex and incomplete plot.

7. Boardwalk Empire

Set during the Prohibition Era, a politician plans his path to power whilst conspiring with gangsters and politicians. It gives an insight into the corruption of American politics. The storytelling has received universal acclaim, while the cinematography has also been praised.

HBO has established itself among some of the best TV shows and it continues to do so. With the rise of streaming services, it will have to further consolidate its position in the television industry.
